King George County’s history starts with numerous cultures of indigenous peoples living along the river for thousands of years. The European expedition arrived, and the Nanzatico Indians weren’t getting along with them. The tribe attacked John Rowley’s farm after he disputed with them on multiple occasions, so the Europeans took 40 of the Nanzatico people and sold them into slavery. The establishment of King George County came about when its territory was separated from Richmond County in 1720. The name is derived from King George I of Great Britain. In 1752, James Madison, former President of the United States, was born in King George County. He was born at the Belle Grove Plantation which was also his mother’s childhood home. During the Civil War, in 1861, confederates set up artillery at Mathias Point in order to blockade the Potomac River. Then a steamer, Thomas Freeborn, besieged Mathias Point to try and run the soldiers out who were manning the weapons. The Commander James H. Ward was wounded in the return fire and was the first Union naval officer to die in the war. Centuries have past and now the Belle Grove Plantation is a bed and breakfast and much of this history and more has been preserved for visitors and residents to learn about.
Things to do in King George County include: visiting Belle Grove Plantation Bed & Breakfast, Oak Crest Vineyard and Winery, Dahlgren Railroad Heritage Trail, Cameron Hills Golf Links, Caledon State Park, Dahlgren (bowling, golf, shopping, concerts, etc.), forests and waterways, Rappahannock River Valley National Refuge and King George Fall Festival.
